"PUNTA DEL ESTE" STATEMENT

September, the 12^th of 2006

Within the framework of the First Ibero-American Encounter of Academic in the field of Psychomotricity, organized by the University of the Republic (Uruguay), considering the unequal development of Psychomotricity and of the professional role of the psychomotrician in the different countries, the participants listed below

DECLARE:

that Psychomotricity is a discipline that acts in the areas of health, education and social integration in the community, as an element to both aid people’s development and to enable them to overcome their difficulties, by means of corporal activity,
that the Psychomotrician is the professional qualified to implement psychomotor intervention, individually or in groups, as consequence of a specific and credited training,
that Psychomotricity, as a discipline, should be considered as a common body of knowledge, practice and strategies, that is broader than the different areas of work and the specific methodologies of intervention that can be chosen within their field,
that Psychomotricity, as a discipline and as a practice, should be based on scientific research that proves its effectiveness and its usefulness for the goals of evaluation, prevention, development, education, re-education or therapy that it seeks,
that Psychomotricity should be studied as a specific Degree course, as is already the case in several countries in Europe and America, in addition, it should also be included in the syllabuses of different educational, social or health Degree or Postgraduate courses which would benefit from the knowledge of the psychomotor approaches, taught by suitably qualified professionals,
that Psychomotricity should strengthen and develop by means of the promotion of institutional relationships and scientific research among the institutions responsible for the training of psychomotricians in different countries.
